Crunch Time

Well, it's that time of year again. Over half way through the semester, and time to hunker down and figure out what order to do things in.

It might seem strange that I'm restarting this blog at quite possibly the most stressful time of the year, but honestly, having a writing project going can be kind of cathartic. I like knowing that there is something I can turn to work on that operates on my time, for my own reasons. Really, this was one of the reasons I had for starting a blog-having something to turn to away from my daily hustle and bustle. After all, the focus of the Hemingway story this blog is named after deals with each person having their own place to go.

As for the internet, I'm determined to make this my place to go.

So, without further ado, A Clean, Well-Lighted Place continues. Perhaps with a typewriter involved. . . (more on that later).

Blog problem

The end of the semester is coming to a close, so here are the problems I've run into trying to update daily (something that shouldn't be that hard to do).

1. I get distracted easily. It's a bit harder to study with a thousand things going on around you, and believe me, being in college, there are plenty of things to do. Having interesting roommates definitely helps.

2. Sometimes, I just don't run into interesting people. I may have simply gone from class, back home, back to class the next day. Granted, those people might be new to readers, but not to me. I want this blog to be sort of a narrative exploration of people that I run into.

3. It's not as fun as it could be. I often want to do something super-creative, and not stick to frameworks. A blog with a specific purpose, well, it defeats the purpose.

4. Not being in the mood for writing is a buzzkill too. There are days when I'm blocked.

Next step: Finding a way to rid myself of all these situations that cause me to fail at blogging.

Laura

Who knows where she's from, what she does. All I know is she can write--write fast, write well, write with what some would call passion, others might call skill.

She's impressive. Subtle, small, soft-spoken until she knows you. Not one of those whose eyes suggest what to expect.

Subtlety is in the eye of the beholder.

Poli sci guy

Lacrosse is his sport, but academics...well, he takes that seriously.

Presentation after presentation in his senior year has gone smoothly, until now. He's standing behind the podium, rattling line by line about sovreignty, outlining detailed concepts in democratic theory, when he notices the professor checking her watch every minute or so.

"Is something wrong?" he asks.

"How much longer do you have to go?"

"Well, I have 25 minutes don't I?"

"The presentation's supposed to last ten minutes"

"Shit."

He's gunning through the presentation now, skipping slides, glossing over subjects that aren't critical to what he wants to talk about. Faster and faster, until at the end of it all, he's out of breath.

His classmates stare. The professor sighs. And the clock ticks one minute ahead--class is done.

Whoo, fell behind

Meh...I haven't been blogging as much, and I've seen so many interesting people. Time to change that.
